Swimming, as a life-saving form of exercise, water safety and swimming education are issues of high international importance. Recognising this, the European Swimming Federation (LEN) has set a completely new objective for 2018. It has launched a programme whose main objective is to significantly reduce the number of drowning deaths through prevention education programmes. In Hungary, the National Swimming Programme offers children the opportunity to learn to swim in several locations. In Nyíregyháza, 27 groups of kindergartens and schools are being taught at the Municipal Sports Centre.

- This swimming pool is of the highest standard, where children can learn to swim in ideal conditions. It is a great opportunity for the little ones, and the aim is not to make everyone a competitor, but to make them water-safe swimmers," said Dr. Tünde Szabó, Government Commissioner.

Children can learn to swim for three years, completely free of charge. They will learn three swimming techniques and will also be taught lifesaving. On Thursday, an Olympic champion visited the children. Attila Czene became Olympic champion in Atlanta in 1996. He believes it is important that as many people as possible learn to swim.

- Swimming not only gives children a love of the sport, but also a love of the system. They learn to stick to a daily routine, which later influences their attitude to work.  Those who leave the programme will also be able to swim with confidence, which can be a part of their lives," said Olympic champion swimmer Attila Czene.

The Municipal Sports Pool also runs a number of programmes alongside swimming lessons. Events are also held here as part of the Move Nyíregyháza programme, and several competitions are held at the facility. The next event will be the Szabolcs Cup.
